Frameworks for Integrating Technology into Education

Using technology in the classroom is quite common these days to meet the demands. Teachers also feel a lot of pressure using it. The TPACK model offers us an innovative framework for introducing technology into education and shows us how to organize our classrooms to give students the greatest possible education while using technology.

What is a TPACK Framework?

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge is referred to as TPACK. It is a theory that was created to explain the collection of information that teachers require to instruct students successfully and make use of technology. Punya Mishra and Matthew J. Koehler’s 2006 article, “Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge: A Framework for Teacher Knowledge,” is regarded as the foundational work of the TPACK model. We consider three knowledge areas in TPACK namely Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge.

  • The Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) overlap allows us to identify how we are going to pair the appropriate strategies to teach the content.
  • The Technological Content Knowledge (TCK) overlap allows us to identify the pairing of the appropriate technology to the content.
  • The Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK) overlap allows us to understand how we are making the content more accessible.
  • The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) recognizes that all three of these sources of knowledge influence one another, that each is significant, and that, in order to create a conducive atmosphere for learning and meeting students’ needs, all three must be taken into account.

Personal Learning

From the ‘TPACK Framework’, I have learned that using technology in the curriculum will promote a deeper understanding of the concepts with active engagement of the students. Each of the elements in the TPACK framework has its importance.  When technology is combined with content and pedagogical knowledge, it increases the interest of the learners and makes the lessons more interactive. It creates opportunities for the teachers and students to reflect upon the concepts in an engaging manner. During my teaching phase in school, I used ‘Smartboards’ that had videos, concept-related quizzes, and stories that helped deliver my lesson plan. It is a useful element of an inclusive classroom that keeps the learners as well as the teachers motivated, engaged, and creates pathways for new understanding. For example, using the ‘Nearpod’ app to create a task or an activity related to the concept being taught will help teachers plan their lessons well with timely engaging quizzes that will enable the learners to assess themselves thereby considering their areas for improvement. Through technology, students can assess and increase their knowledge from the work of their peers using Jam boards, Smartboards, Padlet, etc. Moreover, they can listen to podcasts, watch videos, and use the academic resources available online to stay updated.
